A recording of the 1966 premiere of Gladys Nordenstrom‘s “El Greco Phantasie,” performed in Mannheim, Germany by the Rheinisches Kammerorchester Köln, under the direction of Thomas Baldner. An American composer, singer, and musician, Nordenstrom studied composition with Ernst Krenek, whom she later married. Although the two enjoyed a long and happy life together and occasionally collaborated on vocal scores, the majority of their compositions are very distinct, with Nordenstrom favoring the serialist style popularized by Schoenberg and Webern. Her “El Greco Phantasie” is a 12 note composition scored for string orchestra in which the row is constantly rotated. It was later revised in 1969 so this recording of the original version is of particular interest.
